Pregnant and Considering Adoption?

If you are pregnant and considering adoption for your unborn baby, it is most likely because you are not ready to be a parent. Experiencing an unplanned pregnancy can many times bring on a crisis situation in one's life, particularly if you are young, unmarried, still in school and you are not financially secure enough to support a child. You may have certain educational and career goals in mind in which a baby just doesn't fit into the plan. Maybe the baby's father is not in the picture and you don't want to be a single mom. Your child having a stable and secure two-parent family may be very important to you. If you are not prepared for parenting and you want your baby to have a better chance in life, adoption may be for you.

While considering adoption for your baby, get as much information as you possibly can about the adoption process (legal, physiological and emotional aspects) and about parenting as well. Becoming educated on the pros and cons of both adoption and parenting is very important so you are able to make a fully informed decision. The only way to know what is best for you and your unborn baby is to have clear and factual information about parenting and adoption. This will help you make the right choices for you and your baby's future. The more information you get, the better, no matter what decision you come to in the end. You have a lot of things to consider when it comes to making your decision. Don't make any quick decisions based on your current emotions. Although getting advice from others may be helpful, don't let anybody pressure you into doing anything you're not comfortable with. Take the time to explore your options without rushing or by being pressured by anyone. This is no doubt the most important decision of your life.

The best place to start is adoption counseling. Make a phone call to your local crisis pregnancy center, Department of Human Services or look in the Yellow Pages of a phone book for an adoption agency. Most adoption agencies offer free counseling and keep in mind that you're not making a commitment to adoption just by contacting and talking with an agency. By making an appointment to talk with an adoption counselor, you can ask about the different types of adoption available, how the adoption process works, your state's adoption laws, how prospective adoptive parents are screened and any other questions you have on your mind. You can talk about your feelings and your dreams for the future. You can also talk about what you want for your baby and his or her future. You may even wish to bring a trusted friend, your baby's father or a family member along if that would make you feel more comfortable.

Good things can and do come out of difficult and overwhelming circumstances. If parenting is not for you right now, you have the opportunity to bless a carefully-chosen couple who are unable to have children as well as the chance to give you and your baby a bright future. There are long lists of couples who are waiting and longing for a child to raise and love. It is possible to turn your crisis into a blessing. Whatever choice you decide, early prenatal care is very important. Make an appointment with your family doctor or have a pregnancy counselor assist you in finding a doctor and setting up an appointment.
